Welcome Back!!!
Hi Everyone! It’s been awhile... I have been working on my solo exhibit for the San Luis Obispo Museum of Art plus a lot of traveling with a full workshop schedule! Sorry it has taken us so long to send out a new ArtsyFartsy Newsletter!
So, that said, we are happy to announce that my exhibit opens on Friday, June 1! Titled “Impure Thoughts” -- an yes, the images are exactly what you think they are. Hey, I’m dealing with Catholic grade school stuff, so just the title alone has our local media buzzing. As you can imagine, I’m having fun with this one!

San Miguel De Allende
Paint with Bob in San Miguel De Allende!!
March 17-23, 2013
www.flyingcolorsart.com
Nestled high in the cool hills of central Mexico, San Miguel De Allende is one the hippest, busiest, most charming towns in Mexico. San Miguel is an artist’s colony with many Americans and Europeans living and studying there. It’s a fun town, colorful, musical, full of painting and shopping opportunities.
We will be housed in a lovely hotel with heated pool and tropical shrubbery, close to the art institute and a few blocks from the cathedral and town square. Breakfasts will be in the hotel and dinners at various restaurants in the area. We’re on our own for lunches.
Facade, Parish Miguel Allende
San Miguel is lots of fun becasue there are always gallery openings, a cultural event, concert or play, and some outstanding restaurants. The weather, at this time of year, is perfect.

Paint Cuba with Bob Burridge
Visit the mystical island that has been off limits to most Americans as we delve into the religious and secular life of everyday Cubans. The experience is sponsored by the Center For Caribbean Religion & Culture and Vantage Travel. The trip includes 43 religious features, 3 UNESCO world heritage sites, sightseeing tours, and at least 30 hours of painting instruction with Bob. This is a country of historical contradictions quickly changing... you will not want to miss this stage of it's development. Sponsored by Dillman's Creative Arts Foundation

Roberta from Connecticut asks:
I notice when Bob paints very very large paintings , they are attached to the wall...is it canvas or paper and how is he attaching it?
Showing “Moveable Wall” in my Studio
Thanks Roberta!
When I paint on large, prestretched canvas I simply hang them on long screws (used as hooks) under the top stretcher bar. Right now I am working on very large paper - I made several moveable walls out of 1/2" gatorboard and plywood that I could lean against the studio wall so I would have a completely flat surface.
Painting the Plywood Walls
White Walls
First, I painted the plywood white so I would have a neutral working surface. On that surface, I mount my paper temporarily with staples or industrial tacks.

Bob’s Studio Tip for Loosening Up
Protecting the Seven Foot Pastel Drawings
Medium for Impure Thoughts
Ever since the 7’ x 7’ drawings appeared on my website, I have received many inquiries as to how I was going to hang and protect them? These hand made papers are heavy, rough and perfect for charcoal and pastels, but vulnerable if not protected behind glass. The 7’ size prohibited glass so I “seal” and fix the surface with the time honored spray fixative of casein... milk! The same stuff that protects the Sistine Chapel ceiling for 500 years. And have you seen it lately?
SpectraFix is the pump spray brand I use. I have found other spray fixes tend to darken the pastels. SpectraFix solution dries clear and tough. SpectraFix Natural Casein Spray Fixative for Pastel, Charcoal, Watercolor, Gouache and Mixed Media. Look at these sites for ordering information. Dick Blick, Jerry’s Artarama, Dakota Art Pastels. Shirley from Oregon asks:
Please explain to me how copyright works. I took Bob’s class a couple months ago in Oregon and I do not exactly understand…..does your copyright mean that we cannot paint any pears or other vegetables or fruit or tree or floral or landscape that Bob taught us how to paint in class. Of course, I know that we cannot copy exactly those items that are on his Web pages, but if we do our own versions of the above items? I did really enjoy the class and learned a lot, but I do submit paintings to our local art shows, etc. but just am not sure where I can go on this information.
Dear Shirley,
Thanks for your question -- and it is a doozy!
I have been asked this question about copyright, fair use, etc etc, a number of times and I have spent many hours combing thru copyright websites to see if I could find out anything new.
What Bob and I teach is this - it is an infringement of copyright if another's work is copied - in ANY way. The "percent changed argument" is so ambiguous that it is almost a non-issue. There is no magic formula. Yes - if an artist copies their instructor or a step-by-step from a magazine, they are infringing the copyright. I guess, to be fair, the art magazines should publish a disclaimer OR give everyone a fair use permit. On the other hand, studies completed in a workshop or with a magazine "lesson" were never meant to be works of art to be exhibited, sold or published.
Sometimes artists have gotten away with copying by saying "after the manner of..." or "in homage to..." but it is still copying.
Those are my two cents. A VERY interesting subject and certainly charges up a room of art students!
