Always Paint a Series
Never paint just one. It puts too much pressure on you ("It better be RIGHT!")
Instead... Think multiples of the same subject. Think variations on a theme.

Each one does not become so precious, but instead is a sequence of studies, explorative paintings of the same subject over and over. Most professional painters I know paint multiples. It keeps me focused... for awhile.
